There are a number of ways to pay for an item or service nowadays: cash, credit cards, and mobile payments come to mind as the top three ways to do it. However, each method (save for cash) has some additional complexity added on to it. Your credit card might just be a normal, swipeable card; it could also have an NFC chip built in, which saves you the agony of having to swipe it through a reader by letting you just gently tap it on the top of the device.
As for mobile payments, your smartphone might support Google Wallet, Apple Pay, or who knows what else. That can present a bit of a problem when you're going to pay for something, as it's not always clear just what, exactly, you can use. The smartphone you're holding in your hand might be a lot more convenient than reaching for your wallet, but you're going to look silly tapping it on a device that doesn't support mobile payments.
Verifone is looking to fix up that issueat restaurants, at leastby debuting a new mobile, wireless terminal called the PAYware Mobile e355 that accepts just about anything you could possibly use to pay for a meal. That includes Apple Pay, NFC, EMV credit cards, as well as simpler magnetic stripe credit cards. A barcode scanner is an optional add-on, and the mobile terminal also comes with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and USB connectivity built into the device.
"The prospect of having to purchase new mPOS devices for sales associates when smartphones and tablets are upgraded has been a major inhibitor to mPOS investment among retailers. Verifone's single, modular solution will offer the ultimate in mPOS flexibility, allowing it to persist across changes in devices, even if somebody wants to make a complete switch from one OS to another, " said Mark Shockley, senior vice president of Mobile Solutions for Verifone, in a statement.
There's no word yet on what the PAYware Mobile e355 might cost, but it's expected to be available sometime around late summer of this year. And it might very well just be that must-have device that helps retailers (or restaurants) ensure that they can handle every major payment option that exists right now.
