Bendigo Bank EFTPOS support

Do I have to use my PIN for all transactions in-store from 1 August 2014?

From 1 August, Australian retailers will begin to remove the option of signature as a form of authorisation for purchases. It is expected that within three months, no Australian retailer will accept signature at the point-of-sale terminal.

Contactless transactions, such as using Visa® payWave or MasterCard® PayPass™ will not be impacted by these changes. Transactions under $100 using contactless technology do not require aPIN or signature.

Why is PIN safer than signature?

A PIN is very difficult to guess and should only be known by the cardholder. Using a PIN helps to verify that the person making the purchase is authorised to do so and therefore can protect your money if your card is lost or stolen.

Will I be able to change my PIN?

Yes, you have the option to change the PIN that we issue to you. You can change your PIN at selected Bendigo Bank ATMs Australia wide, by selecting the ‘PIN Change’ option.
Make sure that you select a PIN that is difficult to guess and is not disclosed anywhere with your card.

Will all EFTPOS transactions in Australia need a PIN?

Nearly all EFTPOS transactions completed on a credit or debit card in Australia will require a PIN. However, the following exemptions will apply:

  • Contactless Transactions (such as Visa® payWave or Mastercard® PayPass™) under $100 do not need to be authorised by a PIN and do not require a signature
  • International transactions (transactions conducted by cardholders with cards issued by banks outside Australia)
  • Magnetic Stripe transactions (generally on payment cards that do not have a chip, for example some prepaid cards and gift cards)
  • Signature only cards. These cards may be issued by certain financial institutions to accommodate special needs of individual cardholders and are subject to specific criteria

The terminal in each case will read the card and prompt for a PIN if it is required/accepted.

If the terminal has been updated to only accept PIN, the terminal will display “ENTER PIN” on the screen. It will not allow the transaction to continue unless the customer’s PIN is entered.
